Our ongoing message for this blog will always be love, whether a direct reference or a driving force behind a post. We have a Valentine’s message to share, a song that we know was from our son, sent to comfort and calm us. Music is his way of saying something, his favorite medium on earth and in heaven. We hope this will be a little sweetness for your day.
When we lost our son, we were a sopping mess at times. Numb, a lot of the time. When I think about the state he must have been in to make that decision, I just want to rescue him and hug him, to make him feel safe. The tables turned in this instance, he is doing all he can to love us in whatever way we can receive him.
My son jumped into my dreams like a movie director. He knew we were distraught about our loss, but we were also worried about how to celebrate his life and all the particulars that go along with this sort of event. The location he picked, was the church he grew up in, and the band playing, was dressed in pastel Aloha shirts, inspiring the attire. The music had a double meaning. He played the refrain from Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, over and over.
Don’t worry, about a thing.
Everything is gonna be alright.
He was telling me it’s all ok, stop fretting, and btw, I want Reggae music at my celebration of life.
He got his wish. We hired a Reggae band, a little unconventional for a church, but as long as the words were tasteful, we had approval. Our minister suggested inviting all to sing Three Little Birds as the recessional song. I think it was a positive send-off given the circumstances, a feel-good moment.
This became a signature song for him. We know when he enters the room because the song is playing. If we were distracted and didn’t notice, he’d play the song again and again until we caught on that he was with us. It’s like he’s constantly reminding us it’s going to be ok.
In the spirit of the post, I thought it was worth mentioning that a Bob Marley movie is coming out, and the previews feature that song, Three Little Birds.
Guess what day it’s opening…..VALENTINE’S DAY!
Dang. If love isn’t the ongoing message from our son. He’ll be with us that loving day filled with hearts as well as a whole bunch of people across the globe. He’s telling everyone:

Love your three little birds, Francie, and I love that Alexander is speaking to you and acting as a guide. It’s a beautiful message that everything is going to be all right but I think a lot of young people (and adults too) get stuck on things that haven’t gone right or aren’t going right and that can feel really awful and isolating.
You are so right. I do think we get stuck and I love that you bring it up. Our hope for Purple Introspections is to provide a platform for discussion and thinking. While there isn’t a perfect answer, I believe talking about it whether here, with a friend, or a therapist is helpful. I feel a blog post coming…thank you for sharing your thoughts.
When I saw the ad for the Bob Marley film, I immediately thought of your family and Alexander. I have had the Bob Marley CD “Legend” in my collection since my late 20s.
I’m still hanging on to those shiny objects. I have a young nephew who is experiencing some extremely difficult times for one so young (11), possibly due to bullying. I am stunned that he has considered taking his own life. Keep up your mission of love. It’s more helpful than you may realize.
