Gift for Mom

by | May 10, 2024 | 21 comments

It started with the song “Your My First, My Last, My Everything.” It was the culmination of a move across the country from San Diego to Nashville, mom and son. His new apartment’s restaurant, The Goat, had a gender-neutral wash room where guys and girls used the same sink just like in Ali McBeal, my favorite 90s show. That turned into a long story about Barry White making a birthday performance for one of the main characters. This became our song and I would cry listening to it because I missed him in Nashville.

Not many songs profess the love of a mother to a son or vice versa. I canโ€™t name any. Somehow, our son found a couple to let me know he’s thinking of me and loves me, the words perfect enough. I’m deeply moved because the lyrics tell me how much he’s thinking of me in a forever way.

A & Me Balloon in sky

As close to heaven as we’ll be for now.๐Ÿ˜‡

The first was buried in a series of songs we heard at a coffee shop in San Diego. “Sweet Caroline” caught my ear , a song his buddies played around the firepit in high school. I alerted Hubby and TJ that I thought A. was getting our attention. They shrugged.ย  It was the beginning of us wondering what was coincidence and what was heaven-sent.

Next, came Rusted Root, โ€œSend Me On My Way,โ€ a lesser-known song on one of my playlists but now playing at this coffee shop. My hopes raised it might be him. The words fit. He was telling us to let go.

โ€œHere Comes The Sun,โ€ his bonk-on-the-head tune to let us know heโ€™s talking to us and itโ€™s not just the Spotify algorithm.

Next up: โ€œThere She Goesโ€ by The Laโ€™s. Hmm. Is this for an old girlfriend or me?

It didnโ€™t sink in until later when it slipped into a playlist every so often. The most poignant moment was after spinning on my bike. I was stretching and thinking of him after my session and THE song played.

I burst into tears.

There She goes,

There she goes again.

Racing through my brain

And I just canโ€™t contain

The feelin that remains.

There she blows.

There she blows again.

Pulsing through my vein.

And I just canโ€™t contain

This feelinโ€™ that remains.

To think I’m in his brain and his veins from the other side, Gulp. This is bigger than “My Everything.” I knew he loved me through rolled eyes and grunts, but not to this depth.

The latest profession of love, took me a few times to believe too. โ€œWhat A Wonderful World This Would Beโ€ by Sam Cooke. I read through the lyrics to see if I could surmise a sub-message. The lyrics locked on a section where I couldnโ€™t scroll up or down.

โ€œTake a screenshot!โ€ exclaimed Hubby.

I did. Note the purple background.

Wonderful World Lyrics

He did it again. He’s telling me he misses me and loves me in the most creative and thoughtful ways. He’s “My Everything” youngest son.

Happy Mother’s Day!
